Yard sign design basics:

This is a yard

This is a sign

This is a sign in a yard

These are great contactless advertising vehicles to get thousands of impressions and repeat impressions over time.

Does size matter for yard sign design?

Yes it does! Sure, you can have us print a huge pile of smaller signage but it has everything to do with what the message is and where it can go .

We recommend going no smaller than a 12×18 or a 9×24.

Why?

If you have a simple two line call to action like :

example of a 2 line design yard sign layoutMobile Mechanic

(800) 888-8888

This tells people that your service is available in the area but doesn’t present a call to action .

mobile mechanic yard lawn sign example 3 line textWhere as you do a campaign like :

Mobile Mechanic

10% off

(800) 888-8888

You are giving people a reason to call. But you can’t cram the letters on a small format yard sign without losing the visibility .

How many yard or lawn signs are needed for an effective campaign?

Yard / lawn signs for builder or home services :

One great way for the construction industry or for home remodeling , plumbing , roofers , window installers or other residential services is developing a model home program to incentivize your current customers to display a sign in their yard showing that your company was present doing the work and have the sign displayed for a defined period after the work is done in exchange for a discount on the service.

This practice has been in place as a sales tool for sales people to create a rationalized promotion and to help get other calls and other activities from Private property owners .

Have your customer display the yard sign in their lawn for 30 days after you complete the work . You can offer a 5-10% discount to get the sale and have the prospect feel as if they are getting a kickback on the featured advertisement .

Yes, it is true that there are some Home owner association restrictions that need to be considered but this can not only be a great sales ploy, but can also present a pretty awesome way to sell more in a specific neighborhood .

Digital Printing vs Screen Printing

screen printing versus direct to garment printing

Digital printing has become a stock standard and the technologies have definitely caught up greatly with the times on cost and output. We can now can produce high color photographic and life-like imagery on even the strangest of surfaces.

The main drawbacks in sign production are still overall cost for large quantities vs. screen printing and the inability of most digital processes to get the vivid colors and brightness of screen printed solid colors.

Also, the outdoor life is still limited to 1 – 3 years without any added protection. Screen printing however will last as long as 7 – 10 years without any added protective coatings. Screen printing does have limits as far as resolution for full color images and it is expensive on short runs. We use both technologies to offer the best value for the product.

Yard signs are not meant to be full on long-lasting installs. Though , the inks can hold up for a longer time, it is not recommended to use this type of substrate for long term campaigns.

Design Tips for Yard Signs

How many colors should be in my yard sign design and why?

This is relevant to multiple items . If budget isn’t the issue then multi colors are fine , but remember you are only wanting to get people to the point and make the call to your sales team.

1 color prints will always be the far most economical pricing point on signage . Too many colors can confuse people .

I heard yellow and black yard signs are great eye catchers ?

Yes the two colors are great

Make sure your design is not too cluttered or you are trying to fit too much info on the sign.

See some of these examples:

now hiring yard sign printed with too much text on the designThis sign has entirely too much info on it for people to process. Though, you can make out they are hiring and the phone number, we have to get really close to realize they want a “fork lift tugger operator” and they want welders to apply. In one sense the focus should be split into two designs for the demographic . The text also was run on from improper proofing of the artwork prior to print.

This is too much text to cram in one spot. The website also is a longer website and would probably be missed as well.

The hourly text is also very small.

now hiring yard sign printing companyWe would have laid this example out much differently to help be more effective for the medium. This design would have been fine if printed in a much larger format like on a vinyl banner or other sign medium or even a bill board.

Logos are fine to add in but keep in mind what the goal of the sign is… to get leads or to funnel people somewhere as prospectus.

Note: Do this at your own discretion and research local laws and ordinances before you try posting signs everywhere.

We’ve done the research ourselves and

This is a little trick we’ve seen done throughout the country. It’s frowned upon in some venues but it is very effective. We can’t recommend this but it’s done all the time.

The bandit yard sign is placed near a highway sign.

The sign is being held up by the wire stake but a small hole in the top is made close to the post and the sign is zip-tied to the metal sign post.

This can be longer lasting and will withstand a good wind.

A mowing person may be less likely to smack into it or remove it.

Think about your target audience more – Don’t go overboard.

You need to stay focused on the general, everything else your company does like roofing, windows, sunrooms, gutters, vinyl siding, flooring,  kitchens & baths, tile, drywall, HVAC… Whatever…

All this information simply clutters the sign making the lettering small and hard to read. “Professional Home Repair” would pretty well cover it all. You are trying to get clients to call. You can always say you do not do the particular task, but at least they called because of the sign.

Some of the most effective signs are simple with 2 – 3 lines and 4 – 8 words or less. Here are some examples:

Frequently Asked Questions for Yard Signs

Do yard sign campaigns have a good ROI?

This all depends on your call to action. This is with any advertisement . Short and to the point messages are the most effective . One only has a few moments in time to get the message out .

Remember you are not advertising to just one person but everyone . Your intended demographic may see it or a friend or family member may encounter the sign itself and then snap a photo and share with a friend .

Q: Do you offer custom sizes and shapes?

A: You bet your bippy! ( We really don’t know what a “bippy” is, but the answer is Yes! )

Q: Do your bandit yard signs come with stands?

A: Because different folks are different strokes. We offer different types of stands or ways you can affix to the ground. Some people order these signs to post on buildings and telephone poles. So we separate out the cost for you to have the choice

on saving money or for the need.

Q: How fast can I get my yard signs?

A: This is a loaded question for us because lead time to produce, assuming you have your artwork ready to go or if our fantastic design team needs to come up with some sign graphics and where we need to ship them to and which service you need for air freight or ground.

(You’ll see the options during checkout.) You can always give us a call or shoot a message to us if you are trying to hit a certain deadline.

Remember that current couriers like UPS, USPS and Fedex have been at capacity since the pandemic began IF you need to start your yard sign campaign sooner, time is of the essence in getting your art or concept submitted to us as soon as possible.

Q: Can you print on both sides of the lawn sign?

A: Yup. But it does incur additional fees.

Q: How thick or heavy are the signs?
A: Standard is 4 mm thick. We can go thicker and there are other types of signage materials we can print on like alumacore or other types of boards. Its up to you, but this is by far the most economical option. A box of 100 usually weighs about 50lbs on the 18×24 sizing.

Q: Flute directions and why do they matter?

A: The flute direction is where and how the wire stake for the sign shoved into place to hold the sign up when stuck in the lawn.

So an 18” flute means that the sign is 18” tall and 24” wide .The design would be horizontal or Landscape for the layout and wider overall.

If the flute directions are 24” then the design would be portrait or vertical in nature .

This is important when ordering yard signs from us . Both have their advantages and disadvantages .

Q: What are the benefits of bandit yard sign advertising?

A: Lawn signs are an advertising medium. Yard signs (also known as lawn signs) are an inexpensive, yet highly effective way to spread a message. Seen everywhere during election campaigns, these signs are powerful advertising methods that offer major advantages for both businesses and individuals.

They can be for short-term use, such as political campaign yard signs, yet are durable enough to hold up to repeated, long-term use — even under adverse weather conditions.

A busy street corner can bring hundreds of views in just a few minutes.

Roofing companies, repair businesses and other contractors often place a yard sign at a location where they have done work on a property to advertise their services.

Q: Are they affordable?

A: Yard signs are a very affordable way to get your message out to a large audience. Their low “cost per impression/view” make them a more budget efficient method . It’s like having 100 or more mini billboards out for a fraction of the cost of a short term single billboard .

Q: Are yard signs durable?

A: Yard signs are made out of coroplast/ chloroplast corrugated sign board , a corrugated plastic material with a special corona treatment that uses static electricity to help the print stick best when printed direct .

This makes lawn signs a highly resistant to rain, wind and snow advertising product , allowing for  all season outdoor use.

Special UV inks are used that are fade-resistant giving you vivid color even when used in bight sunlight for long periods of time.

Some dyed types of signage like the yellow boards will fade over time . Don’t expect this product to be a long term placement scenario , as it’s a really good temporary campaign medium . Metal signs or other types of substrate  make a better long term application .

Q: How heavy are yard signs? Are they easy to set up?

A: Lawn signs can be placed almost anywhere, placed quickly and easy and quite effortless, and easy to move them around and to set them up. Since yard signs are flat and light-weight they can be stored in a small area when not being used, and easily transported in volume when being distributed to locations.

If the ground is frozen, you can take a portable drill and make holes in the ground to help with setup. Or if you need us to help out with larger distribution we have teams standing by in markets across the US ready to put your messages out!

Another way is pre drilling holes to put up with zip ties. Staples or having a staple hammer is also great for wooden stakes or poles.

Q: What sizes of yard signs can I order?

A: The typical yards sign is 24″ x 18″, but they are available in many different sizes, and we can even die cut them into custom shapes like stars or circles or other wild and wacky cuts . Keep in mind that is an upgrade custom service and it maybe a good idea to consider your overall budget .

Q: How can I make my yard signs more effective?

A:Keep your yard sign design basic and to the point . Only the most important info should be showcased  as most viewers are not seeing your lawn sign from close up.

Stick to the essentials: company name or logo, main services offered, your phone number. A simple messages with bold letters and easy-to-read colors that are easy for a passersby to read – especially if they are driving.

There is science and research that actually shows what the averages are .

If you go too far off with trying to cram too much info on your sign, you defeat the purpose .

Eye-catching graphics are a great way to quickly communicate your message without relying on text.

Grab their attention to quickly convey your information or entice them to your businesses services without going into too many details.

Are QR code’s good on yard signs?

Yes and no . This greatly is dependent on where the actual lawn sign is placed . At a busy intersection or a place of traffic it may be great for visibility but not as easy for the end viewer to stop and scan.

We recommend doing a text this number or call this number campaign.

Services like MightyCall.com are very effective and cheap ways to create a system for people to call, direct the campaign or even text message for more details .

Why use this method with your yard sign campaign?

  • Calls or texts are easy for end users
  • You capture the prospects data to rehash the campaign
  • You can track placement campaigns and see which areas get the most traction on yard sign placement

The process to install your signs is fairly easy! Just follow these three steps!

1. Align

Make sure the metal prongs line up with the flute directions.
null

2. Push

The sign should slide smoothly onto the metal prongs with little force.
null

3. Place

Now just place your sign in the desired area!

Yard sign printing makes advertising is a simple and affordable way of making your business or event look more professional.

Make sure the bandit signs don’t just fly away!

Wind is almost always a need to consider when placing signs in open areas.

Simply because of the nature of the product, minimizing cost is normally done with the stake. As you know, the people won’t see your advertisement or message with it laying flat in the grass.

Attaching your message to a wooden stake, fence or building is great but often isn’t doable or even an option.

We’ve seen people use T-stakes you can get at hardware and co-op type stores like Tractor Supply, Rural Kind and some big box places. These can work and be sturdy but often too many regulations make this option not just expensive when doing multiple postings but also can just not make it doable.

Its best to think of your bandit sign posting and marketing in volumes and just keep in mind that some may just vanish into thin air. So, its always a numbers game .

Thicker and heavier staking can not only be expensive but often will be stolen by those looking for a free lunch for their own signage.

Also, a heavier stake is not necessarily designed for wind. Our HD Goal Post stake for example is designed for hard ground or multiple use. It in fact is probably less effective in the wind for several reasons.

In an effort to make as effective a stake as possible and after months of testing in real situations, we found that using 2 regular stakes would offer the best resistance to the wind and protect the sign from being damaged by bending. As the above picture shows, simply insert the first stake as normal, then insert 1 prong of the second stake between the first stake prongs. Swing out the second stake and bend over the extra wire for safety. Holding the sign in 1 hand and the extra stake in the other, work the set into the ground. Be sure the wires are fully inserted into the sign and into the ground. You now have placed a sign that is held by a “tripod” and has 3 wires into the sign itself. This will hold for winds in the 20 – 40 MPH range in most types of soil. Obviously many factors are involved and this will not save every sign but it will greatly improve the longevity of many of your signs and keep your information out and displayed while others may be bent over or even gone.

With all these steps complete you’ll have a nice, professional sign to advertise for you!
